Assosiasaun Radio Komunidade Timor-Leste (ARKTL) is a community based organisation that was established in 2001 to represent and support community radio in Timor-Leste. ARKTL is a grassroots membership-based association for community radio rations throughout Timor Leste. ARKTL and its 16 member stations have been developing their knowledge of what works for community radio in Timor-Leste since 2001. ARKTL has nation-wide reach and represents stations in all 13 districts including Timor-Leste’s capital city Dili. ARKTL is an active member of the World Association of Community Radio Broadcasters (AMARC) since 2004.
Timor-Leste is a diverse country with a diverse people and culture and in addition to the official languages of Portugese and Tetun, there are 32 dialects spoken across the 13 districts. The spoken word is how most people get their information and the oral tradition goes back for centuries making community radio an essential tool for knowledge sharing, education and entertainment.
Prezado Ximenes, president of ARKTL has been working for ARKTL on a voluntary basis for six years. There are currently two AusAID funded volunteers that are working for ARKTL – Elena McMaster and Claudia Santangelo.
The current board of ARKTL is under review and members will have the opportunity to elect a new board at the 2014 ARKTL Congress.
