Assosiasaun Radio Komunidade Timor-Leste (ARKTL) acts as an ambassador for community radio in Timor-Leste and is committed to supporting community radio to be a progressive, independent and an inclusive media that represents the voice of Timorese people. ARKTL is also committed to helping resource community radio with the tools and skills to build the capacity and knowledge of communities, to encourage democratic debate and produce high quality and relevant programs.
ARKTL is the national representative body for community radio in Timor Leste ensuring that the community radio sector receives government support and is included in any discussions and consultation around media policy and laws.
ARKTL is closely affiliated with Fundasaun Fundu Media (FFM) and is based in the National Press Office in Dili. ARKTL has strong media ties across the nation and has a proven track record for successful partnerships with international NGOs and Austraining. ARKTL is also building its affiliation with international media organisations and community radio stations, including Asia Pacific Journalism Centre (APJC) and 3CR community radio in Australia. ARKTL through its membership with the World Association of Community Radio Broadcasters (AMARC) has given ARKTL staff and its members the opportunity to attend international conferences in Jakarta Indonesia, Balngalo, India, Argentina and South Korea. These conferences have focused on community radio in the context of developing nations, using community radio as a tool for positive social change and the protection and rights of independent journalists. The knowledge learnt has been taken back to country to grow and strengthen the community radio sector in Timor-Leste. ARKTL aims to always develop its national and international partnerships to continue to provide for and help grow community radio in Timor-Leste.
